Accurate Survey Data to Support Critical Structural Assessment
Working within heritage buildings often presents unique challenges, particularly where structural concerns require careful investigation and highly accurate survey information.
LGA was brought into this project by a structural engineer following concerns about movement within a historic building. At some point in the building’s history, a structural beam had been removed, raising concerns that its absence may have been contributing to the building beginning to spread.
To support further investigation, a precise measured survey was required to accurately record the building geometry and provide the engineer with dependable information to assess the extent of movement and calculate the specification for a suitable replacement beam.

The Project
Project Type: Heritage / Structural Engineering
Client: Structural Engineering Consultant
Location: Measuring structural movement within a heritage building
Services Provided: Measured Building Survey, Structural Survey Support, Existing Building Drawings, Detailed Dimensional Data Capture
The Challenge
The primary objective of the project was to accurately determine how much movement had occurred within the structure following the removal of a key beam.
Due to the nature of the building, this required detailed measurements within areas that were difficult to access, while ensuring a consistently high level of accuracy throughout. Heritage properties often present additional surveying complexities, including irregular construction methods, historic alterations and restricted access points.
Given the structural concerns involved, dependable data was essential to provide the engineer with confidence when assessing the issue and calculating an appropriate replacement beam specification.
Our Approach
LGA carried out a precise measured survey designed to capture detailed dimensional information throughout the affected areas of the building.
Using specialist equipment and an experienced approach to surveying challenging environments, we were able to accurately record difficult-to-access spaces without compromising the quality of the data collected.
The resulting survey information was translated into clear, accurate drawings that highlighted the geometry of the building and provided the structural engineer with the detail required to carry out further analysis.
Our focus was not only on accuracy, but also on presenting information in a way that could be easily interpreted by the wider project team.

The Outcome
By transforming a complex structural concern into measurable, actionable data, LGA provided the clarity needed to progress the investigation with confidence.
The detailed survey information enabled the structural engineer to assess the extent of movement within the building and calculate the specification for an appropriate replacement beam solution.
Through accurate measurement, dependable drawings and the ability to capture information in challenging environments, LGA helped support informed decision-making within a sensitive heritage setting.
